Now, this is morbid. “Secure your Legacy for a Century”, WordPress says in regards to “an exceptional new plan for those who want to secure their online legacy for a lifetime – and then some”…
Or rather: “A glorious revolutionary new way to make $38,000.00 quickly”
Yes, for just 38 thousand dollars, you can secure your domain and platform for a solid century. WordPress may not even be around at that time but your blog… uh… may still exist if WordPress does also exist at the time?
Honestly, I’m not too sure how to feel about this. If I let my blog run for a hundred years with the current costs, I’ll pay 6500€ roughly… in total… spread across a hundred years… That’s doable and a lot cheaper.
Apparently, the price comes from really good hosting and really good support… although I wouldn’t bank on the support part given that my support experience has been rather hit or miss.
And the worst part about this plan is that you’re locking yourself into the WordPress eco system for a hundred years. You pay a hefty sum of money. That’s fat cash that I don’t have and that I wouldn’t be willing to spend on a blog or whatever… A big stack of cash like that is a lot to pay for a service that very much may turn horrible in just a few years…
Who is to say that WordPress as we know it won’t get taken over in a Robot/A.I. uprising? Think about it. If I was an evil A.I., I’d probably take over WordPress and Tumblr first. Control people’s porn and hot takes, and you control their hearts.
All jokes aside, I won’t use this and I don’t know anyone who would. Just host your family blog or whatever with the personal plan for a lot cheaper. You probably won’t need anything else, after all.
I’m getting too old for this shit.

This was basically my thoughts on the matter when I saw this, too. I think WordPress.com is trying to be too big for its britches, if you ask me.

It feels like they’re whale-hunting at this point. This is not a good addition, at all, and if even one person goes for it, WordPress already made enough money, perhaps for the next century, lol.

Genuinely insane. The world (and specifically the internet) continues to surprise me.
I actually attempt to print most of my posts (cost permitting) and keep them in a folder so I have a copy of them. It’s deffo cheaper than 38,000 haha
