Cryptmaster just released onto PC!

A while ago, I wrote about Cryptmaster, perhaps one of my most anticipated releases this year, developed by Paul Hart and Lee Williams and published by Akupara Games – and now, it’s finally available on PC! Huzzah!

This game is a dungeon-crawling narrative-driven adventure game where the titular Cryptmaster plans to slowly but surely rule over all mortal beings BUT until then, he’ll have to settle with you.

Dig deep to see if you can solve pretentious puzzles, fight tyrannical toad men, belt beautiful songs with bullying bards, and reconcile your relationships with rambling rat men.

As part of its launch, Cryptmaster will be bundling with 1000xRESIST for a limited time with a 32% discount, too, which is pretty darn exciting… not to mention a 10% launch discount on the game itself if you’re only interested in that!

Cryptmaster is a bizarre dungeon adventure where your words control everything! Fill in the blanks with text or voice to uncover lost abilities, embark on strange quests, and solve mind-bending riddles. Can you conquer the crypt and uncover the mystery at the heart of Cryptmaster?

When I played the demo, I had an absolute blast typing in all sorts of weird things like “uwu” and being surprised that there was an answer for it in the game already. The Writer/Game Designer, Lee Williams, said about the game that they’d “love to say that the character of the Cryptmaster game came to [them] fully-developed in a dream and demanded [of them] to make his game, but unfortunately, the truth is a little messier…”

Williams goes on to say: “Originally, we just wanted a spooky dungeon master as a sort of hint and quest-giver, and we used my voice as a placeholder while we built the demo. People liked the character so we decided to stick with it! It was also useful for me to do both the writing and voice because it meant I could add and edit all the (very many!) voice lines as needed, and evolve the character alongside the story.”

“The voice is a layman’s tribute to a whole bunch of my favourite actors, drawing mostly on the very hammy tradition of horror movies from the 50s, 60s and 70s. However, he’s really more of a sitcom character than a horror one – a slightly pompous old fool whose dignity is constantly undercut by his inflated sense of his own importance and ability!”

As you take control of a party of adventurers, you have to remember attacks, spells and actions by solving riddles. At times, you might need to smell, feel or lick objects to figure out the Cryptmaster’s riddles, adding another layer of weirdness to the already eccentric experience.

Interacting with the world and conquering quests by typing or speaking any word you can think of creates so many possibilities and opportunities, and it really felt like a work of art and a passion project when I played the demo back at the GamesCom last year.

As you decipher forgotten spells, and then type out their names in battle to unleash the might of your undead heroes, you can easily get yourself lost in a weird, wild world featuring talking doors, flirtatious toads, sarcastic ghouls, and many, many more odd creatures.

The game doesn’t just stop there but adds more and more layers to its gameplay, featuring more and more gameplay mechanics, including creature collecting, card combat rap-battles with bards and much, much more.

Cryptmaster is available now on Steam and if you’re still not completely convinced that this heavily stylized and weird title is up your alley, you can still try out its demo over there, too. But beware, the Cryptmaster might just keep you in his clutches and you might just find your new obsession in this phenomenal game!
