Inside Bobo Bay: New Demo Features and Interview with Austin from NewFutureKids

Bobo Bay is an upcoming creature-raising game by New Future Kids that I’m really hyped for!

Inspired by the Chao Garden side-game from the Sonic Adventure series, it reimagines the idea as a full standalone experience: raise quirky little creatures called Bobos, train them, and watch them compete in races, trials, and brawls, mash them together to create new, stronger or prettier Bobos, and just have a wonderful time.

With seasonal cycles, unique traits, “mashing” (think “breeding”) mechanics, and thousands of possible customisations, Bobo Bay blends cosy creature care with competitive strategy in a way that feels fresh yet familiar.

I had an absolute blast checking out the playtest for this game as well as the demo that was released on Steam, and I’m terribly excited to play the full release once it’s out in Q2 of 2026.

The new demo update introduces a lot of highly anticipated features, including…

  • Sagas, which are a sequence of competitions that one Bobo participates in. It’s sort of the main goal of the game and adds a lot of structure to Bobo Bay. Completing or winning Sagas unlocks new species of Bobos, new town areas, and new competition maps.
  • Brawl Mode, which is a full fighting mode with retro sound effects, different stances and even the ability to juggle other Bobos.
  • In-Game Cellphone, aka the main UI element of the game, is complete with the ability to call your Bobos over and take pictures of them.
  • New WIP town with much larger areas, new shops, a training centre and much more
  • Customisation in the form of new traits, accessories, and animal parts
  • New Species of Bobo, called the Phantom species
  • Minor features, such as juice boxes, new loading screen animations, and more.

Today’s post doesn’t only share the news about the new demo, though, but I’ll also talk about an interview I did with the sole developer behind Bobo Bay.

Austin, the solo developer behind the game, and I got to sit down for a bit to have a chat about the game. I got to ask him about how Bobo Bay expands on Chao Garden’s foundations while fixing its grind, why the karate mode became a full-blown fighting game, why customization never feels overwhelming, and Austin even shared some behind-the-scenes info about his design process for the game, the origin story of this title, and how he stays motivated.

Perhaps one of my biggest surprises was how much Austin interacts with the community and how he not only manages the Discord server but also hangs out in people’s streams and joins even joins them spontaneously from time to time.

If you wanna check out the full interview, you can find it over on my YouTube channel (embedded below). I had a really good time talking to Austin and just having a bit of a chat about this game.

Make sure to check out the new demo for Bobo Bay and wishlist the full release! It helps the developer a lot with getting the game out there. Besides that, leaving reviews for the demo is also immensely helpful!

Beyond that, if you wanna keep up with NewFutureKids’ progress on the game or stay in touch, you should definitely check out their socials here:
