How to 100% Cryptmaster

Welcome, traveller.

If you made it here, chances are high that you don’t like grinding fish, enemies and riddles too much which is what this guide is for.

Frankly, this post is supposed to help those of y’all who just want to have access to all the attacks and lore because quite honestly, the backstories of each of the four main characters are incredibly cool, so I don’t fault ya for wanting to get to the meat of things a bit quicker.

You can find the list of words below in the “Memories” section of this post.

Hence, this guide will be separated into a few different sections that you can just skip to as you see fit. If you have no idea what Cryptmaster is, I’d recommend checking out my review over here where I highly recommend the game!

Before we head into the guide, though, I just wanna say, again, that I’d highly recommend playing the game before you use it. It definitely takes away from the achievement hunting journey otherwise.

Also spoilers ahead. Beware.

  1. Progression-based achievements
  2. Whatever
  3. Quests/Choices
  4. Secrets
  5. Endings
  6. Memories
    1. Man of War – Joro’s Memories
    2. Lady Killer – Syn’s Memories
    3. Melody Maker – Maz’s Memories
    4. Sorceress Supreme – Nix’s Memories
  7. Thanks for reading.

Progression-based achievements

These achievements are literally just based on progressing through the game and don’t require any specific steps of sorts. They’re unmissable if you just play the game as you go. On that note, I don’t think any of the achievements are exactly “missable” since you can always return to any areas at the end of the game. It’s one of those “get put back right in front of the final boss” scenarios, essentially.

  • Blasphemer: Awarded upon desecrating the first altar.
  • Upstepper: Awarded upon leaving the crypt.
  • Royal Flush: Awarded upon getting past the rat that guards the palace.
  • Iconoclast: Awarded upon helping Ulara get the books of the four lost gods.
  • It Burns!: Awarded upon stepping into the sunlight at the temple.

Whatever

You get these achievements for beating a few different named characters in Whatever. You’ll also unlock their cards for future battles which is neat.

  • Beginner’s Luck: Beat the Cryptmaster at Whatever.
  • Even Steven: Beat Steven at Whatever.
  • Out for the Countess: Beat Countess Ulara at Whatever.
  • Card Magic: Beat Orthos at Whatever.

I guess I could recommend a deck but generally speaking, I just ended up using cards that buff my damage numbers and share a lot of letters. I think it heavily depends on what sort of strategy you prefer, really, but personally I enjoyed being able to knock out multiple units at the same time, especially after buffing each letter up.

Quests/Choices

These are achievements that you might miss if you don’t look for the quests and stuff. There are also some that require specific choices to be made, more on that later.

  • Here Come the Brides: Awarded upon marrying Goggo.
  • Goodnight, Sweet Prince: Awarded upon putting Goggo to Sleep.

Both of these are based on your encounter with Goggo the Moist. You can choose to either marry Goggo to become Royalty by giving him the Lovejuice or to put him to sleep and steal his royalty certificate. That said, personally, I ended up going for the Lovejuice, afterwards played Whatever against him, and then I just returned later to talk to him again so that I could use the Sleepjuice after brewing it. This way you get both achievements (and the one for Whatever).

They’re technically mutually exclusive in that you cannot do both immediately. I haven’t tried doing Sleepjuice first and Lovejuice later, so I’d just recommend doing it this way. Not to mention that it’s funnier this way.

  • Stinkbomb: Awarded upon digging up Ratty’s treasure.

In the beginning area, there is a rat who can’t find his son, Ratty, so you embark on a quest to find Ratty and use the “Dig” command where his treasure is hidden. It’s near the entrance to the Pools area.

  • Brew Master: Get the Portable Cauldron.

If you bring Ratty back to his father, you get this.

  • Special Delivery: Deliver the Piper’s diss track to Ulara.

Upon leaving the Piper’s place, you’ll be asked to deliver this diss track to Ulara. Simply play the wax cylinder in her chamber when you’re up there. There’s some dialogue and the achievement should pop.

Secrets

These are achievements that require you to do specific things and as such that might not be too obvious.

  • Potty Mouth: Unlock the swear jar.

For this one, you simply have to swear a bunch. If you curse enough, the Cryptmaster will give you a swear jar which will put one soul into it whenever you swear.

  • Bragging Rights: Catch a rare fish.

For this one, you’ll have to simply catch one of the five fish with the “special” names. Zugzwang, Lazaretto, Echolalia, Decolletage, and Agathadaimon sound pretty different from your usual fish, don’t they? They can be found in the Underwood, Rumpus, Seacaves and Bridge locations.

  • Repeat Offender: Get sent to the cage two times at the Gate.

For this one, you simply do the same thing again after you get locked into the cage. So, you either go up to the gate before getting all the helmets or if you give the guard a number of 1-6 for the question of which squad you’re a part of. Either way, you’ll end up in jail for a brief moment, and you afterwards just have to do it again.

  • Clickety Click

For this one, you need to search the Sea Caves for a specific well with a sign written in Payn’s language.

I can’t do spoiler tags here so it’s basically just “Mornay”. If you type this, you’ll unlock a portal location. Once there, you’ll have to appease the Crab King who only speaks in clicks and clacks… If you take the clicks and clacks (1s and 0s), you can translate it using a binary converter… to learn that the Crab King is saying “Hey” to you. Simply say “Hey” back and the achievement should pop. There’s a secret when you use “Hey” with the small crabs and the crab people, too.

  • Legendary Angler: Find the Master Rod.

For this, you’ll have to catch each of the legendary/rare fish. These fish come with a ring each corresponding to a letter. When arranged, you’ll find out a word that brings you to the location of the Master Rod. It’s a reference to a popular adventure game franchise.

  • Snooper: Find Ulara’s secret room.

For this one, you’ll need to look for a specific bookshelf in Ulara’s library that has various Erotica in it. When you try to read these, the Cryptmaster won’t let you. You can “push” this bookcase in which in turn will open the barred door in the library where you can get the achievement.

  • Refuser: Have the Cryptmaster guide you through the refund process.

For this one, you’ll need a fresh save but luckily a backup is created when you delete your save file.

Start the game and proceed to the first enemy without unlocking “HIT”. After the chest with the first puzzle, you’ll have H and T unlocked. The game will prompt you multiple times to unlock “HIT” first. Don’t do it. Just move on. What will then happen is that the Cryptmaster will not only get disappointed but also break the fourth wall to instruct you on how to get a refund. Afterwards, you’ll get asked if you wanna give it another try. Saying “no” will quit the game.

Endings

These achievements are awarded for the three endings. At the end of the game, you’ll have a choice between one option and another. Technically, there is a third choice, though, which is what the JSN achievement stands for. When you do either of the three endings and continue the game, you’ll find yourself back at the altar before the fight. Hence, simply redo the fight and then proceed to the next ending.

  • Paragon

In the ending, when given the choice between “kill” and “smash”, choose “smash”.

  • Grateful Undead

In the ending, when given the choice between “kill” and “smash”, choose “kill”.

  • JSN

In the ending, when given the choice between “kill” and “smash”, choose “No”.

Memories

For these four achievements, you’ll need to unlock all of Joro’s, Maz’s, Syn’s and Nix’s memories and attacks. These aren’t all unlockable at any point in time which is why you’ll have to progress to the next chapter to unlock the next set of words.

That said, if you simply get to the final chapter, you can also just unlock all words in one go. I found this to be far easier, personally, but I also had most of them unlocked at that point in time.

If you wanna do this without looking up the words, you can get letters through fishing and fights mostly, as well as the various riddles and chests. That said, this section will be separated into four sub-sections. If you can’t find the last word that you were at in the list, simply look up the last word you found in your memory collection and then search (Ctrl+F) for it in this post.
