For ages now, as the devs at Team Cherry have been at work, Hollow Knight: Silksong has become one of the most anticipated games… ever? I’m not sure about that statement but it definitely is high up there, and it’s understandable since Hollow Knight was just that much of a great game.
Personally, though, I never really got all that excited for Silksong and while I figured that might change when the release date is actually announced, I now have come to the realisation that I simply don’t think I’ll play it…? It’d be a different story if I got a review key for it but I doubt that’s gonna happen. I haven’t even reviewed Hollow Knight yet, haha
At least, I won’t play it on release or any time afterwards. I’m not even sure if I’ll ever play it, to be absolutely honest, given that Hollow Knight was just that much of a complete experience for me.
I reckon that for many people, this is a dream come true, getting more Hollow Knight content, and getting to explore the world again with fresh new eyes and a whole lot of cool mechanics, but at this point, I doubt that people will like it as much as they hope they will.
I’m sure Silksong is going to be a great game as well, but it simply can’t possibly live up to the expectations fans have of it at this point in time. It will inevitably disappoint people.
More than anything, I know for sure that on release, there will be dozens of “hot takes” by people trying to ragebait fans by claiming that Silksong isn’t that good, after all, just like how it was with the critically-acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3.
Silksong might just be nominated for Game of the Year, alongside Umamusume, Deathstranding 2, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It definitely is somewhat likely that that will happen… and there will still be voices claiming that it sucks or that it’s a bad game.
Heck, there might even be people in the community that could possibly get upset because playing as Hornet is different than playing as the Knight… or that they expected something different. Silksong will definitely be a different game that can stand on its own, even if it has “Hollow Knight” in its name.
For me, though, my expectations are tempered. Again, I might play it eventually, but Hollow Knight was a really good game and I’m kind of satisfied just experiencing that game again and again from time to time. The story is lovely, the music is phenomenal, the graphics hold up incredibly well, and overall, it’s just a fantastic title… and it’s well-rounded, too. I never had the urge of playing past the Hollow Knight, personally, although I will probably try to go for Radiance eventually. I also never had the urge to 100% the game or anything given its difficulty and my ineptitude.
As such, I just wanna say that, to me, at least, Hollow Knight was a perfect experience in and of itself. Silksong probably will be great, too, but I don’t need to experience it anytime soon personally.
