So, for a while now, I wanted to rework my Twitch emotes but I frankly can’t find the motivation to do it. My issue comes from my drawing struggles. I can’t draw the mage hat. I don’t know why. I do it once and it looks fucking amazing. I’m super proud of my “wave” emote’s hat but I can’t seem to quite replicate it… but my “artist block” is mostly stemming from the lack of progress in improving what I’m drawing. So, today I wanted to talk about what issues I have and how I want to overcome them.
The issues that I have with my drawings are:
- I can only draw my OC but not consistently.
- I can’t recreate the hat better.
- Different poses are difficult to do.
- It may need a rework.
- I can’t make shading work.
- I’m not good with other characters/creatures/prompts.
The OC issue is that I effectively don’t have experience with other people’s characters and I’d have to try and maybe practice with Pokémon or animals to branch out a bit…? I mean, I don’t have to – but it’s more of a change of pace if that makes sense. Similarly, the hat is posing as an issue but more practice would fix that. Getting more practice is hard however because I can’t seem to get motivated.
Shading is super difficult to do as well because I can’t seem to make it work? I used to shade with grey and highlight with white when I in reality should shade with a tone of purple or blue or red or something. There is also cel-shading which is super interesting and I’d like to know it but at my current level, it’s more frustrating to practice than it is to watch tutorials of how to do it. My point is that this is kind of the source of the frustration and that frustration is stopping me from practising more. I now decided though that I’ll break out of this “slump” by doing the following.
Practice more. But I won’t do shading. Instead, I’ll draw several Pokémon that I like (from Chandelure to Mismagius to Duskull, and so on) and try to just get better at drawing. Then I’ll try to shade one drawing that I actually liked… and then I’ll try doing my OC again.
It’s really a matter of getting a change of pace with zero expectations and then having one success to snowball from… I hope that works. Then I can apply shading and practice that specifically. Then I can work on creating an OC that works better and that I have less of a hard time to draw… and I’ll try drawing lots of Pokémon like Mismagius or Witches or something to get some practice in with the hats and whatnot. Once I’m better at the drawings and whatnot, I want to rework my current emotes and streamline them a little bit more before I eventually maybe even create a 2D-Model to Vtube with… I feel like that could be pretty amazing if I could accomplish it and it’s certainly something I’d love to try out! Pointers are appreciated for the shading. If you have any prompts for me to draw – as in characters from games or whatever – I’d love to draw them in a cutesie style and potentially practice with them. Let me know!
