Humble Choice – June 2023

New Month, new… old… last month’s Choice. Honestly, I’ve been busy again, so I haven’t had the chance to talk about June’s choice and it’s already the first Tuesday of July, so the next Choice is nigh… but usually, you can still claim last month’s Choice even when the new one is out.

June’s Choice was a banger. It contained a bunch of great games and I’ve been meaning to talk about it but I just haven’t found the chance yet. So, that’s what we’ll do today!

This time around, I ended up putting a bunch of these games onto the same level. Personally, I believe that most of the games here are great and there is massive value if that’s what you’re into.

So, for starters, Curse of the Dead Gods is great. I loved it when I played it and if you wanna hear more thoughts on that specific title, check out my review here. The idea is essentially that you’re trapped in this ancient temple and you need to make your way through a plethora of other temples to taste freedom again – but you’ll be set back to the beginning when you die.

The aesthetic of the weapons, the procedural environments, the clever enemy design, the great soundtrack, and more than anything the replayability of this game really make this one my favourite game out of these eight here, so far,… but I already own it.

GRIME, on the other hand, is this Metroidvania where you play as a plant-based lifeform that adapts to its environment and takes in enemies they encounter.

You assimilate enemies, mutate your form, and develop your own playstyle as you make your way through a grimy environment with many biomes and all of that Metroidvania goodness! Big Map.

Now, Ghostwire Tokyo and Remnant: From the Ashes are pretty big games. Others may put them into the first two spots but personally, I really need to get into big games like that. Open World titles are sort of like a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, you can spend A LOT of time in them – but on the other hand, I personally find it so draining to play. If I don’t play enough of them, I feel bad about that – but if I do end up getting sucked in and I am not productive enough on other fronts, I also feel bad… and it’s kinda easy to suddenly play too much of big games like these.

Remant is a souls-like whereas Ghostwire is more of this Open World supernatural game and they’re not really alike, to be honest, but it takes me quite a few spoons to start them up and if they’re good (which they probably are!), it will take a lot of willpower to stop playing them as well.

Anyway, Honey I joined a cult is a cult tycoon game and while I love the idea, I kinda wasn’t impressed by it. I didn’t play much, really, but it didn’t strike me as all that much of a unique game. A lot of what I’ve seen is just basic tycoon stuff that I’ve seen in dozens other games. Still, I had fun, but I expected a bit more if that makes sense.

Eternal Threads sounds like it’s right up my alley: A story-driven Puzzle game with Time Manipulation! The thing, however, about Eternal Threads is that it looks super dark and I just struggle with games like that. My eyes do weird things at times. It looks interesting but I just don’t think that it’s a priority right now.

That being the case, it does remind me of Tacoma (Review) in a way, so looking forward to eventually playing it!

Now, Meeple Station is developed by the Regions of Ruins developers… so I had high hopes for this but it ended up being weirdly obtuse and unintuitive. I play a lot of Strategy games and this one just wasn’t for me. Turbo Golf Racing is basically Rocket League but with Golf. I’m not a fan of this at all.

Overall, this month was great in terms of games. I only owned Curse of the Dead Gods which should make for a nice gift to a friend – and now I own more games. Yay. My backlog’s growing bigger! Huzzah?

Did you grab this Choice or did you not find anything to your liking? Also, do your thoughts differ from mine? Let me know!
