The Stray Sheep #8 – The Aftertaste of a Ban

Today I got banned from a YouTuber’s discord community. I’m not going to defend myself or rant over stuff (or at least I don’t want this post to end up as a rant), I just wanted to comment on a few things.

Let’s listen to some micropop today. I like Jack Stauber’s
quite a lot to be honest! His music is kind of weird every now
and then but other it’s also quite cool in the background, imo.

I joined that discord community quite a while ago and at some point, even though I didn’t watch that YouTuber’s content anymore, I still was there. Maybe I just enjoyed seeing what other people are doing right now. Maybe I just liked the conversations I had with some people there. Maybe I was just there for the memes, I don’t know – but it wasn’t for the YouTuber at all, which in itself is kind of weird, I guess?
Why would you join someone’s community and stay when you don’t watch his content.

I liked the community for the people that were there. I really did! But at some point, I just didn’t feel welcome at all due to me being on a few mods’ shitlists. There was this mod that acted in a rude way towards quite a lot of people. “Respect each other” is a rule that everyone should listen to, but apparently mods are the exception. And this is the point where I deleted 400 words of me ranting over that mod’s bigotry and the discord’s double-standards. I didn’t want this to become a rant.

What I actually wanted to talk about is the fact that I didn’t feel welcome in that environment. At. All.

This mod that hated me for speaking up, let’s call him SirSquirrel, was a major bully who abused his rights as a mod in a manner that isn’t allowed for mods to be used (or rather kicking people without a warning and banning people without a reason). There’s another mod, let’s call her Yzma (like that witch in that one Disney-show!), who was in a relationship with SirSquirrel and was heavily biased towards him and that defended him, saying that “it’s not fair to call him a bully” and that I’m the one who’s “being rude”. Ignorance is bliss, especially in relationships, I guess?
So, I was on their shit list. Which is fine, you don’t have to like everyone, you meet, right? Also, there’re not many people that are on SirSquirrel’s good side anyway, so being on his bad side isn’t something that uncommon. I eventually got banned, without a reason accompanying the ban. I don’t know what got me banned.

But here’s what this post is actually about:

I didn’t feel welcome because of those bullies among the server-staff.
I was there only for a few people and the memes, I guess, not because of the YouTuber.
I didn’t want to leave – although not feeling welcome – since there were people I cared about on that server.
And for those people on that server that I actually liked and considered friends, I coped with bigotry, double-standards and the epitome of Arcturus Mengsk!

And in the end, I got freed. It had a bad taste, not being able to steal memes in the memes-channel and it sucked for me to not be able to talk in those conversations anymore, but now I don’t have to cope with bullies anymore. I don’t have to keep silent in fear of getting banned when SirSquirrel is being a jerk again. Also, I can invite those, that I liked, to my own discord, so it’s no loss, I guess.

Great video on that note btw! Cave Johnson is such a douche.

It’s a bad taste for sure, but I like the aftertaste of freedom that it leaves you with, once all the bitterness that you may have had towards a matter is gone.

So, with this talk about bitterness and a sweet aftertaste,…

This post is part of a contest/challenge called Blaugust! The goal is to post as much as possible and participants are awarded different prizes depending on the goal they achieved. My aim is to post on all 31 days of August and if you’d like to know more about this “event”, you should check this post out.

  1. I have found that YouTubers are a different area all together. I am lucky to MOD for one on his channel, and belong to his discord, but that is because he’s a great guy overall. I was in a place like you had mention with another YouTuber, and his community was all about the monies. While yes I agree that they need the donations and what not to help them at times, but they had a habit of rubbing it in faces of those that couldn’t afford to pay. They had community game nights where if you didn’t support him with cash, you couldn’t join. The one I mod for, he’s different, course right now he’s just getting back into streaming due to RL Issues for the last few months, but as for others, they tend to be about cash flow only.
