So, today, I decided to pick up a new plant. It’s been more than three years now since I moved into the new place, and due to the very inconvenient position of my windows (on the roof), I don’t really have a good way of keeping plants in sunlight over here.
Look, I like plants… but I have a bad track record with them. They don’t tend to last very long. My favourite flowers are hortensias/hydrangeas, but sadly those are a bit above my current skill level.
So, instead, I opted for this Marble Queen Pothos here… at least, I think that’s the name of it? It’s relatively hardy and does well in indirect light, so that’s pretty great.
More than anything, she’s a beauty, and I’m already super attached to her. Her name’s Leukothea, named after the Greek sea goddess and protector of sailors.
In Greek mythology, Leukothea wasn’t originally divine. Her life began as Ino, a princess of Thebes and the daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia. Her sister was Semele, btw, which means that Leukothea was Dionysus’ aunt.
Ino and her husband basically took in the infant Dionysus and helped raise him, which in turn angered Hera, who responded by driving the couple to madness. Athamas became violently insane and killed their son, Learchus, prompting Ino to flee with her other son, Melicertes, and eventually throw themselves into the sea. In turn, Ino transformed into Leukothea, a sea goddess and the protector of sailors, who in Homer’s Odyssey actually stumbled across Odysseus, whose raft got wrecked during a storm, and she lent him her magic veil, telling him to abandon his wreck and instead use this veil to keep afloat while he’s swimming to safety.
Oh, also, Melicertes transformed into Palaemon, a minor Greek God that protects harbours, gates and ports. His body got carried by a dolphin to safety, where his uncle, Sisyphus, found him. So,… that’s pretty cool. But I don’t know enough about him.
Anyhow, so, I don’t know if I need to eventually move the plant into a bigger pot or not, but for the time being, Leukothea is looking super pretty in the middle of my room. Hope she doesn’t die anytime soon.
I really just chose that name, to be honest, because of the white marble-y lines on the leaves.
