Risk of Rain 1 was probably one of the first Indie Games that I ever played and possibly the gateway drug that lead me into the genre of roguelikes. The idea is that you fight on an alien planet to gather gold to unlock chests that make you stronger.
At the same time, you also have to race against the time as the game gets progressively harder with every minute that passes, meaning that you only get so much time to loot and become stronger… before the game outpaces you. Here’s my review if you wanna hear more about it!
Hitting that balance between looting/levelling and progressing through the stages made Risk of Rain 1 interestingly in-depth and Risk of Rain 2 continued that trend but in 3D.
While I love the sequel, the first game has a special place in my heart and in a way, I prefer the 2D Pixel aesthetic over the 3D cell-shaded look… especially as Third-Person comes with its own issues such as motion sickness and having to aim.
Hence, I’m more than excited about the fact that “Risk of Rain Returns” has been announced by Hopoo!
Frankly, I was a little sad when I heard that they sold the IP to Gearbox, given that that would mean that there’d be no more Hopoo-developed Risk of Rain games… but it’s also a very small studio with only so many hands and brains to develop a game like that and Risk of Rain 2 would probably require a lot more resources than they have.
They said themselves, on the discord, that they put all the ideas they had for the game into Survivors of the Void, meaning that they don’t really know where to go from there.
So, I believe it will be fine… and this decision will allow Hopoo to work on new games that will be both challenging yet fair, a staple of the original Risk of Rain and Deadbolt. Risk of Rain 2 still had that sort of in there but with certain damage sources, it didn’t really feel like you did too much wrong, especially as enemies could shoot you from afar and possibly add damage over time effects to you that just deal damage to you out of nowhere.
Anyhow, Risk of Rain Returns will feature:
- the old items, characters, enemies, bosses, and areas from the first game!
- new items, enemies, characters, bosses, and areas from Risk of Rain 2 + more new content
- old and new SFX and music made by Chris Christodoulou
- Steam-integrated Multiplayer!
- New and improved HD graphics
- and more!
Honestly, I’m rather excited about this. Again, Risk of Rain 1 has a special place in my heart and frankly, it’s an amazing game, still to this day. You can wishlist the game over here if you haven’t yet. What do you think about it?
