On the Rammstein Situation

During the past few months, many victims came forth with allegations against Rammstein’s lead singer, Till Lindemann.

Some accuse him of using his position to illicit sexual relations whereas others imply that his team is grooming young women to have sex with him, often without their consent and under the influence of drugs.

The allegations are, at this point, “just” allegations. Whether they’re true or not is not something I can say nor prove but the fact that many of the victims spoke to reporters anonymously under oath adds weight to the accusations.

Meanwhile, Rammstein previously denied the allegations. Now, however, Lindemann appears to mock the situation, the victims, and everything they stand for. During his first two concerts in Berlin, the lead singer changed song lyrics to make fun of the situation.

In “Angst”, people are now afraid of “Lindemann”. During the ballad “Ohne dich”, Lindemann changed the lyrics about the birds no longer singing to the singers no longer fucking.

And this isn’t even the first time that Lindemann’s mocked the situation:

Previously, when a reporter joined him backstage, the lead singer alleged that the reporter can see how everyone was getting drugged and raped there in a mocking manner.

Thus, despite the band stating that they’re “taking the allegations and situation seriously”, none of the members actually said enough regarding Lindemann’s comments, thus clearly signalling that they do not take the allegations and situation seriously.

This isn’t a Lindemann problem. It’s a Rammstein problem.

Obviously, I don’t know whether or not Lindemann’s a rapist… but as it stands, he’s mocking victims that came forth with their stories in a society where speaking up like this earns you harassment and threats beyond belief.

Till Lindemann is sixty years old… and yet he finds it funny or deep to make comments like that, to change lyrics, to spit into the faces of every victim out there.

He’s a symbol of the state of a society where most sexual violence cases don’t even make it to court. As it stands, victims have a hard time proving that it happened. Most perpetrators get away with it whereas victims coming forth get attacked, harassed and threatened.

The whole Amber Heard case showed us how willing people are to call a woman a liar even when nothing is proven.

At the moment, Lindemann’s innocence isn’t proven – neither is his guilt. If it comes to a court case, I doubt that Lindemann will lose it, even if he is guilty.

The discourse online is incredibly toxic. Women are called attention whores and liars. Fans rush to Lindemann’s defence, voicing their support. Those darn anonymous women are only doing it for fame… oh, wait, that doesn’t make sense!

Innocent until proven guilty?

Something I hear a lot online is the argument that Rammstein’s lead singer is “innocent until proven guilty”… but the people using that “argument” don’t understand it, clearly.

After all, “innocent until proven guilty” is just something that judges in court have to abide by. It doesn’t matter to the general public.

Just like those fans have just decided of their own accord that all women are liars, I can decide that I will listen to the victim’s stories and then make my own judgement… currently, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lindemann was a serial rapist.

The thing with Lindemann is that it’s not just the fact that he’s mocking the victims like this… it’s also his hobby of fetishizing sexual violence in his poems… and the porn he publishes of him fucking people’s faces and not letting go of them even though they’re having a hard time breathing and begging him to stop.

Stuff like that really doesn’t make him seem like someone innocent.

As it stands, there is no proof in support of him nor is there proof against him. Some of the victims spoke up under oath, anonymously, and thus, that adds weight to their words.

Meanwhile, all that Rammstein said was “We’re taking this very seriously” – and then everyone ignored Lindemann mocking the victims, clearly proving that they don’t care.

Amidst the toxic discourse online, many men argue that Lindemann could pick any woman he wants and that the women accusing him of these serious charges are ugly, according to them. Thus, Lindemann is innocent because why would he have to pick these women, let alone drug them?

There is even this pick-up artist online that made a lengthy video with “rational and logical arguments”, rambling on and on about anecdotal and hypothetical fake arguments that make him look super dumb. It’s the Dunning-Kruger effect all over again.

Summary

In the end, it’s yet another of those situations where the word of the victims (plural, many) stands against the word of a powerful, old, white man… and for whatever reason, people are believing the alleged culprit much more often than the victims who are being mocked by said culprit.

What upsets me the most about this situation is that Lindemann is a father of two daughters…

Let’s say his daughters would be sexually assaulted by someone and the (alleged) culprit mocked his daughters… how would Lindemann feel about it?

As someone that wrote about rape fantasies in his anthologies, how would he feel about that? Would he applaud the “artful mockery” or would he be angry?

How does a father feel when girls get exploited, gaslit, mocked and harassed?

I just can’t imagine that he’d like that, so why does he mock the people accusing him now?

To sum it all up, this situation is fucked up and while I don’t know whether Lindemann is guilty of sexual assault or any of the other allegations, I can say for sure that he’s guilty of being a huge twat, if not worse.

  1. Hey!
Thanks for this piece. I am substantia nigra on Twitter, and I like this a lot. There’s way too little content in English on the matter. I am sure that there are more victims out there, who may not even know what’s been going on in Germany…
    So keep reposting this!

    Thanks again,
    S.N.

    1. Hey, glad you liked it!
I mean, I kinda assumed the allegations were being mentioned in other countries, too. The whole situation started with Irish fan Shelby Lynn which then caused more people to come forward with their own experiences. I was thinking about writing a post on the exact allegations but figured there’s a lot of coverage already on it.

  2. Ha! He was proven innocent! He was perfectly justified to mock his accusers, since they made it all up.

I hope you will write a piece just as long as this one, to apologize to him.

    1. I haven’t heard of any court ruling that they’re innocent. Do you have a source for this claim?

And even if so, the case still stands that Lindemann is glorifying rape in his poems and that he’s mocking any and all accusations. As a father, he should be ashamed, even if the allegations are wrong.

…which is the actual point of the post… Something you would’ve known, had you actually read the post.
