OPUS: Prism Peak Is Out Now on Steam and Switch – A Melancholic Adventure Worth Watching

From SIGONO, the award-winning indie game studio behind the OPUS series, comes a beautifully melancholic tale exploring themes of “love, soul, and self-discovery”. OPUS: Prism Peak just released on Steam and Switch!

Prism Peak follows a weary photographer stranded in the Dusklands, travelling with a girl who’s lost her memories. Together, you uncover the mysteries of this land through your camera and find your way home together.

The OPUS games created by the Taiwan-based SIGONO games are a series of rather heartfelt experiences that managed to invoke a plethora of emotions in me, from joy to sadness. The people at SIGONO are just so darn talented in their capability to write interesting characters and unique stories.

As a huge fan of OPUS: Echoes of Starsong, as well as their prior titles, Rocket of Whispers and The Day We Found Earth, I’ve been eagerly waiting for this release for quite some time now.

Prism Peak has you make choices that lead to divergent endings. Lost in an ethereal realm and using your camera to find a way home, you navigate fragmented memories in a way that echoes Return of the Obra Dinn, gathering clues to deduce the true identities of the figures you encounter and uncovering their significance in your waking life.

The developers themselves described it as a “cosy Silent Hill”: While the classic series manifests inner trauma through horror, Prism Peak’s world reflects the protagonist’s past and regrets through a soulful, ethereal journey.

Photography plays a big part in the game, with you using an old analogue camera to capture the perfect shot through framing, timing, exposure, focus and filters. Photography in this game reflects how closely you look at the world. As you take in your surroundings and understand the desires of each spirit you meet, you’ll slowly uncover the world’s secrets through your lens.

Beyond that, you’ll need to take specific photos for the various shrines bearing aperture symbols, connecting different worlds and holding those aforementioned secrets.

The dusklands represent a world that very much mirrors reality but doesn’t actually bear any trace of humanity. Spirits in the form of animals call this place home, and through careful observation, you’ll eventually uncover the reason humans no longer exist and what the real purpose of this realm is.

After quite a few years of development and one small delay, OPUS: Prism Peak is now out on Steam and other platforms. If you wanna check it out for yourself, you can do so over here.

I’ll have a review on it ready soon once I’ve played through it!
