There’s something magical about the way Dark Souls 3 handles PvP. For starters, you can summon ghosts to your world or people may invade you – but it’s not necessary that that happens, at all. You can prevent it by the use of signs, from what I’ve heard… but you can also summon friendly ghosts that help you fend off invaders – at least I was told that.
I haven’t actually tried that out myself. I haven’t invaded people yet… but I did get invaded a few times and it has been fun.
Invasions are great because people will come at you with exciting builds and tactics – and juking them is incredibly satisfying if you pull it off.
Meanwhile, based on the covenant you’ve pledged yourself to, you may get summoned to fight others, to protect invaded people, or to just fight for the sake of fighting.
The Watchdogs of Farron covenant that I initially pledged myself to sounded incredibly cool regarding their values. “The Watchdogs ensure that the warriors sleep in serenity, by taking the form of loyal spirits and hunting down those who would trespass the woods of Farron.”
You’re protecting the Farron Woods from invaders, attacking invaders while protecting poor Ashen ones in the area that would be about to take a big hit if it weren’t for your help. The Watchdogs of Farron are noble in their endeavour – but I found it odd how they get automatically summoned and… frankly, it’s a little annoying, in my opinion.
Hence, I decided to pledge myself to the “Blue Sentinels” covenant as it allows me to get summoned only to defend people and it doesn’t take place automatically. It’s also rarer for it to happen but I encountered a different problem with this now: Traps.
Sometimes, people lay traps in areas like the Smouldering Lake or other places with strong enemies (Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, for example). So, instead of fighting invaders or instead of helping their helpers, people basically let them get finished off by the environment/enemies and thus afk in some area where they will receive all the drops from invaders/summoned spirits.
It’s honestly annoying to see whenever it does happen… but it can’t be helped. I end up leaving the world, instead joining another. I’ve heard that Blue Sentinels are often treated as protectors rather than an extra hand to fight invaders and I’m honestly fine with it.
If you don’t like PvP, the game allows you to summon blue spirits that will help you against invading forces. While I’m part of the Blue Sentinels, I’m the helper against those baddies… and it’s fun.
I’ve seen tactics where people have been using a slow frost weapon together with a quick bleed weapon – and dodging around while trying to find a window to attack has been nice and it made my heart race, actually.
I’m not good at PvP but lately, I’ve really been enjoying Dark Souls 3’s PvP, so I’m excited to play more of it some time once I have more time (and nerves) to deal with traps and strike down invaders.
