So, 2024 has just kicked off and deciding on what the first post of the year will be is difficult.
You want to kick it off with a banger, right?
Figuring out what a banger of a post is exactly, however, and coming up with something good in terms of quality and all of that complicated stuff is too much of a drag for me right now.
Hence, let’s go with fluff.
In this post, I will give you all my well wishes for the new year and then proceed to re-introduce myself. New year, new Magi, kinda? I figured that might be a good idea since a while has passed since I last wrote about who I actually am.

Happy New Year!
2023 was a rather tumultuous year for many people.
From the cost-of-living crisis to the ongoing pandemic, and… well… politics and wars and everything but despite it all, we made it here, folks. It’s 2024.
I wish you all a happy new year full of high highs and few lows. I wish you all much success in life, good health, lots of great and happy moments, as well as good RNG and little to no lag.

When it comes to resolutions and goals, I want to share a quick PSA that they’re arbitrary and simply a red string to guide you through the new year. They don’t have to dictate everything you do, and not accomplishing everything is not a big deal. It’s just a nice tradition to uphold and it’s a good thing to have goals.
The goal is the journey, after all, and the journey is the goal. Managing to accomplish something, be it a resolution, a goal or a project, is a great thing, of course, but trying to get there is in itself amazing.
Making the first step, after all, is incredibly important and incredibly difficult.
Hence, if you made a first step in the past year and didn’t go all the way through with it, that’s fine. Be proud of yourself for trying!
Happy New Year! May the year 2024 be as kind to you as you should be to yourself.

Who is Magi anyway? And what the heck is Indiecator?
So, hi there, I’m Dan or Magi or MagiWasTaken and I’m the person that writes on here, I guess… this is my personal passion project and I hope you enjoy what you read here.
I’m a queer university student in Germany with a migration background, aiming to become an English & Philosophy teacher, who has the goal to shine a light on topics I find important, including Indie Games (for the most part actually) and other topics.
In terms of hobbies, I love to cook, play games, read and I really enjoy listening to good music, at times zoning out completely. I really dig plays and novellas, although I do read a fair bit of prose as well. My favourite authors are Lovecraft, Kaur, Süßkind and Kafka.
In terms of music, I am into all sorts of genres, from electronic and techno music to rap, jazz, swing and rock to metal, post-hardcore, grindcore and modern rock… and Indie. This blog is called Indiecator, so of course I listen to Indie music.
Some of my favourite artists include Cleopatrick, Fuck Art Let’s Dance, STOCKMANN, Bonaparte, Crywank, Chris Christodolou, Badflower, Arcitc Monkeys, and Dead Poet Society.

And when it comes to gaming, I love strategy and colony sim/citybuilder games. I love story-driven and exploration-focused experiences. I love roguelikes/roguelites, roguelike-deckbuilders, card games, action games, and stealth games… and my backlog is way too big and I need to play some of the titles in my collection.
I stream on Twitch. With my recent move and the internet situation and everything, I wasn’t able to do so for quite a while but I’m looking forward to returning to Twitch to be able to work on the aforementioned backlog, playing through games and well, making progress. So, tune in sometime, I’ve got exciting plans. :)
For this year, I want to write more about indie games, as per usual, but I also want to shine a light on the behind-the-scenes stuff with interviews, the “science” behind game design and even the good & bad of the gaming community.
I want to talk about toxicity in gaming and the reasons as to why it occurs, the ways it manifests itself, the impact it has on people, and ways on how to deal with it.

I want to highlight great examples of games that feature little to no (if any at all) toxicity, and I want to talk to devs about how they managed to accomplish such a nigh impossible feat.
But I also wanna talk about other topics on here, ones I find very important in the non-gaming world, such as problematic people or difficult situations. I want to improve my writing in that regard and perhaps make a bit of a difference in the world by reporting on such topics. Hence, it may get political here and there but not too often.
And well, aside from that, I’d love to set out to talk about mobile gaming this year. Having had no internet connection for the past two to three months, gaming on mobile became a good way for me to unwind, and the fact that mobile games are heavily stigmatized has bothered me for a rather long time.
Perhaps we can destigmatize it. Perhaps, we can even unravel why said stigma exists in the first place, as well as shine a light on really good mobile titles? Perhaps, I could even write about the “typical” mobile experience and how long a F2P person can enjoy a game before it becomes a slog?

Either way, that’s a lot of stuff to theoretically write about, so I hope you look forward to this year as much as I do – and I hope you enjoy whatever posts I plan on writing this year.
I used to say “Cheers!” at the end of my posts and stopped at some point… but this time around I think it’s appropriate, even if I’m clinking metaphorical glasses with a cup of tea right now… either way, huzzah to a new year full of many great moments!
Cheers!
